Bridging the gap between academic study and practical experience .. ITA continues to takes the lead with its SITT program

Bridging the gap between the knowledge that graduates acquire during their academic study and the practical experience required by the labour market in both the public and private sectors is crucial. To this end, the Information Technology Authority (ITA) has taken the lead to bridge this gap by offering IT training and certification opportunities that aim to increase the number of certified IT individuals in different IT domains to meet the immediate needs in the ICT sector.





ITA organizes Open Data & Best Practices Symposium

The Information Technology Authority (ITA) is organizing the Open Data and Best Practices Symposium, which will be held at the InterContinental Hotel Muscat - Jabrin Hall, on Monday 3rd June from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Tuesday 4th June from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.





The Sultanate joins the world in celebrating World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2013

Under the theme ‘ICTs and Improving Road Safety’, today the Sultanate celebrates the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2013, which is annually marked on the 17th of May. Organized by the Information Technology Authority (ITA), the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, the event takes place at the Al Bustan Palace - A Ritz Carlton Hotel beginning at 9 AM, under the patronage of Major General Abdullah bin Ali Al Harthy, Chairman of the Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulance.





CITT team in cooperation with Bahwan Cyber Tek conducted an IT skills upgrading session

In an effort to enhance the skills of IT trainers who instruct at Community Knowledge Centers across the Sultanate and give them the opportunity to learn new techniques that will add more value to their knowledge, the Community IT Training (CITT) team in cooperation with Bahwan Cyber Tek recently conducted an IT skills upgrading session from the 6-9 April 2013. The training session was divided into two parts, with Dr. Ronald Jun Lontok and Ms. Sabiha Parveen expertly leading the sessions. Instruction for first two days touched on e-learning and different topics.

Colleges and universities are working hard to beat the challenges caused by the next-generation’s demand for ICTs, as it seems that money is no longer the top motivator, as the next generation also requires some sort of access to familiar technology that keeps them connected to people. According to a recent survey, half of college students and young lecturers would rather accept a job that provides a lower salary, but with IT device flexibility, social media access, and mobility than a restrictive job with a higher salary.

Oman is witnessing an exponential growth in those expressing an interest in information communication technologies (ICTs), resulting in many young Omanis eager to innovate and create. One such group, the ‘Omani Inventors’, was on hand to display their latest innovations during COMEX 2013 – Oman’s IT, Telecom and Technology Show. Firas Al-Musafir, Team Leader of the ‘Omani Inventors’ group, said, “Our aim is to showcase Omani youth abilities’ to innovate and create. We also hope to encourage youngsters to follow the path of innovations in science.”

Simon Pierro brings magic to Muscat! Sometimes having been called the “Wizard of OS”, the world renowned German magician and a TV presenter Simon Pierro is most famous for his iPad magic tricks and is the creator and brains behind the ‘iPad Magic Show’. His YouTube videos have reached more than 15 million views in total. With this explosion in popularity, Simon travels all around the world to perform his magic shows in which he uses technology to create mesmerizing illusions and, for the last few days he has been entertaining visitors in the Sultanate of Oman.





International participation at COMEX 2013: Estonia, Lithuania, Kuwait and Singapore on hand to share their expertise

Held under the patronage of e.oman and organized by OITE Trade Fairs, COMEX 2013 – Oman’s IT, Telecom and Technology Show – again includes key international participation, selected to give visitors a peek into what other countries are doing in regard to e-services. This year’s COMEX has four international participants from Estonia, Lithuania, Kuwait and Singapore.





New car radar system being developed to avoid over-speeding

A new car radar system, developed by two assistant professors at the Sultan Qaboos University from the Department of Information Systems, is on display at COMEX 2013 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre. The idea for this project began in 2009, in the same year which His Majesty Sultan Qaboos gave a Royal Speech on the issue of road accidents at Seih Al Makarim in the Wilayat of Sohar. Since then, a team of researchers from SQU, led by Dr. Jamil Al-Shaqsi and Dr. Hafith al Shihhi, began developing new ways to prevent and reduce road accidents in the Sultanate.
