About Oman Summer of Code
 

It is a national youth program in the field of IT, adopted by MTC, targets Omani youth application developers to give them an opportunity to work on various projects using Free and Open Source software to develop applications functional in different work environments over a 3 months period. In addition to gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios, participants walk through intensive training and orientation program in FOSS and entrepreneurship while implementing the assigned projects to them. MTC coordinates with various government and private organizations to identify list of suggested projects, which participants can work on and mentoring organizations benefit from.
Participants can choose to work on an idea or a project from the below categories:


1-   Enhance eGovernment Services.
2-   Enhance Civil Society eServices.

In addition, the eighth edition of the program this year will implement  the program online  by using several open source applications and programs, some examples are as follow:

1- Video conferencing and calls with screen sharing https://jitsi.org/

2- Teams collaboration platform https://zulipchat.com/

3- We will use YouTube to record the technical orientations and archive content.

4- Project management and code store https://about.gitlab.com/

 

Selection Criteria

The registration period will take three weeks and after that the application forms will be filtered considering the below:

1. Age must be above 18 years old.
2. Scientific and cognitive competence.
3. Test score (Online test).
 

Oman Summer of Code Statistics:

Participant’s number since 2013 are 342 participants and 58% got employed after the program. The number of projects completed within the program are 60 and 5 SMEs were established after the program completion. Some successful SMEs that is established after the program are:
