Celebrating Women in the Maritime Sector: A Tribute to Their Exceptional Contributions and Continuous Efforts
The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology places great importance on the role of women in the maritime sector, recognizing their exceptional developmental contributions and active participation in various fields. Under the theme "Safe Horizons... Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety," the ministry celebrates the International Day for Women in Maritime on May 18 each year. This celebration aims to highlight the remarkable achievements of women in this sector, acknowledging them as key partners in the journey of giving and building towards development.
This celebration aligns with the International Maritime Organization's decision in December 2021 to designate May 18 as the International Day for Women in Maritime. The goal is to recognize the essential role of women in the maritime industry and empower them in this vital field across various specialties. The celebration also serves to acknowledge women's outstanding contributions and their exceptional role in advancing economic development.
In this regard, Khadija bint Mubarak bin Ali Al-Siyabiya, Maritime Safety Specialist at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, stated that the current phase of the renewed renaissance has witnessed the distinguished presence of Omani women in various sectors, including the maritime sector in its various fields. Omani women have held significant leadership positions in marine navigation, marine engineering, port management, and logistics, in addition to conducting advanced scientific research in this sector. All these achievements reflect the government's broad interest in empowering women in the maritime sector through adopting targeted initiatives and providing training and qualification programs.
Al-Siyabiya explained that the empowerment of women in the maritime sector in Oman has significantly contributed to the maritime economy. She emphasized that she and her colleagues feel proud to work in this vital sector, which is considered a pillar of sustainable development. Al-Siyabiya highlighted that the continuous expansion of women's involvement in this sector directly enhances its national role, noting that women’s occupation of various technical and specialized positions results from ongoing planning and essential enablers. She praised the continuous attention from the senior management of the ministry towards women's work in the maritime sector and their efforts to enhance their training and practical capabilities through specialized courses and workshops.
Basma bint Hamad Al-Hashmiya, Chief Marine Navigation Officer at Asyad, stated that working in the maritime sector is a great honor for Omani women. She pointed out that this sector is receiving wide attention from stakeholders in various related maritime work sectors, whether governmental or private. Al-Hashmiya emphasized that dedicating a day for women in the maritime sector highlights their status and capabilities. She also noted the extensive leadership support received by women, which has positively impacted their practical achievements and enhanced their abilities to continuously excel in this specialized field. This contribution is vital to the comprehensive development movement in the Sultanate of Oman.
Al-Hashmiya concluded by noting that the annual increase in the number of women working in the maritime sector confirms the sector's prestigious position and the continuous support from the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. This support enhances the methodical and sound training and qualification of national cadres, considering the precise nature of maritime work.
