MTCIT signs MoU with Amazon to launch cloud data services In Sultanate of Oman
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American company Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch cloud data service centers in the Sultanate of Oman under the name “Amazon Web Services” (AWS) Data Center District. This is part of the Ministry's efforts to attract foreign technology companies with an international reputation to invest in the ICT sector in Oman. Amazon implements this technology in The Sultanate of Oman as the first country in the Middle East after its successful implementation in the United States of America.
MTCIT Undersecretary of Communications and IT HE,Dr Ali bin Amur Al Shidhani signed the MoU on MTCIT behalf while Wojciech Bajda on Amazon behalf. Through this cooperation, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology aims to open the horizons of investment in cloud data service centers in Oman, support technical capabilities, and contribute to supporting the digital economy and enhancing its capabilities. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the world's largest companies specialized in cloud hosting services, and under this cooperation, The Sultanate of Oman will be one of the countries investing in modern technologies and a link between the Middle East and Africa.
Empowering Companies
This project will also ensure that companies have access to the latest cloud technologies that enable them to continue innovation and digital transformation across the region, which will contribute to establishing Oman as a global hub for cloud data. Therefore, under this cooperation, the company will provide the Ministry with several educational and training initiatives and startup empowerment programs as part of the investments associated with this cooperation.
Digital economy
MTCIT Undersecretary of Communications and IT HE,Dr Ali bin Amur Al Shidhani stated that Sultanate of Oman’s Infrastructure and submarine cables will contribute in supporting Digital economy projects ecosystem .His Excellency also said that these aspects will heighten Oman’s position as an international cloud data hosting hub in the Middle East. He expressed his gratitude and happiness regarding this cooperation with one of the major companies in this industry which will provide to Oman the best cloud computing technologies for the various businesses.
His Excellency also added that Sultanate of Oman AWS data centers will empower local clients to store their data as well maximizing the benefit of the fast response. Henceforth contributing to the reach of local companies to the advanced technologies and benefit from a full set of cloud computing services such as analytics, AI, computing, databases, serverless technology, storage services and many other services that will propel innovation the business of these companies.
H.E. Dr. Al Shidhani concluded that through these investments, MTCIT aspire to achieve Oman Vision 2040 in Communications and Information Technology industry, including achieving the desired growth in the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies and empowering specialized economic sectors in this industry.
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is moving forward in strengthening the infrastructure and providing support to the innovation ecosystem. The launch of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Data Center Zone in the Sultanate of Oman represents another step in the Ministry's efforts to promote technology and communications industry as well attract basic skills and capabilities that contribute to creating promising opportunities within various innovation-based sectors.
